IRGOLI

It lies in the Cedrino Valley, in a landscape that ranges from gentle hills, watered by streams and covered in greenery, to the 860 meters of the granite crests of Mount Senes.

Irgoli is a town of 2,300 inhabitants, known for its excellent cured meats and cheeses, as well as its fine craftsmanship, including exquisite wooden, iron, and ceramic objects. The town's streets are adorned with murals, which tell the story of rural life and a passion for music. Since 1986, the town has hosted the Accordion Festival, an international ethnic festival, in August, and a collection of 120 bellows-operated instruments is on display year-round. A thorn believed to have been from Jesus' crown of thorns has been kept in a shrine in the parish church of San Nicola since 1500.

The Holy Week rites revolve around the precious relic. Some rural churches are 'superimposed' on Nuragic monuments: such as Sant'Antioco, on a nuraghe, and Santu Miali (13th century), on a Giant's Tomb, of which a slab was reused as an altar.
